ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT [PRJ60408]

Module Overview

This studio forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Architecture programme. This capstone project is based on the theme ‘architecture with an impact’ and the formulation of an architectural intervention that embodies sensitivity in the meditation between architecture and socio-cultural needs, the designs of internal spaces, and the demands of the external constraints. Progressing from the previous studio where it focused on urban streets, this semester, aims to empower the urban fabric by focusing on the needs and aspirations of the place and its people in relation to the current times.

Project 1-Pre-Design Studies & Analysistory

During this phase, students will work in groups to thoroughly investigate, study, and analyze the site before commencing with the design process. The primary objective is to become acquainted with the site by fully immersing themselves through a process of "sensing the place." This approach allows them to assess the current conditions of the site in relation to the target user and project objectives. By doing so, they can develop the most appropriate strategy and program for their design.

Project 1A

Project Title : Designing A Third Place – Urban Room/City Hub Emphasis : Sensing the City: Creating Impactful Spaces for People Consideration : Social Architecture, Post-Pandemic and Sustainable Design Location : Malacca City

Project 1B

Design Strategies and Exploration

The primary focus of the project is to deeply understand the needs and aspirations of both the people and the location, an approach referred to as 'Sensing the City.' The aim is to design an Urban Room/City Hub, intended to serve as the city's 'Third Place.' The project is driven by the objective of aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG10, which aims to promote inclusivity and reduce societal inequalities. Additionally, it also seeks to address SDG11, emphasizing the role of architecture in creating positive changes by designing more sustainable cities and communities.

Project 1B

Site Requirements â–ª The scheme must also provide for a proper drop-off zone for your user. â–ª Appropriate soft scape and hardscape should also be included. â–ª Entry/Exit points (ingress & egress) for pedestrian, vehicles, and services. Gross Floor Area â–ª The building must be no larger than 2,000 m2. Moreover, not lesser than 1,800m2. â–ª Fully open spaces, landscaping & parking space are not to be included in area calculation. No. of Floors â–ª Minimum of (3) levels and maximum (5) levels from the ground level line of the site. â–ª Basement parking does not count in floor area and level.

Project 1C-Final Design Presentation & Report

After completing the Project 1b Schematic Design phase, students must now further develop and finalize the design scheme for the Urban Room project. This phase includes incorporating environmental and technological strategies, along with technical resolution. Additional lectures on poetics, tectonics, sustainability, and more will aid students in this process. The final design should demonstrate critical thinking, structural sense, environmental awareness, and compliance with regulations, while also being innovative and impactful. The students' end goal is to present a clear and comprehensive design aligned with the project's objectives and requirements.
